Defining Asthma

                  WHAT IS ASTHMA ?

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that narrows and inflames the airways, causing wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. In the United States alone more than 22 million people suffer from asthma, and approximately 6 million are children. People with asthma have inflamed airways, which are tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. The inflammation makes the airways sensitive and swollen, and asthmatics react to environmental substances that they breathe. When the airways narrow and swell, less air flows into the lungs and they create more mucous than normal which exacerbates the problem by further narrowing the airways. The chain reaction of this process results in airway constriction and shortness of breath.
